Some wedding days simply transport you somewhere else, and Desiree and Steven’s American Swedish Institute wedding did exactly that. From the moment I arrived, it felt as though we had stepped into a romantic European garden tucked away in the heart of Minneapolis.

The historic architecture, lush courtyards, elegant details, and timeless atmosphere created the perfect backdrop for a wedding that was every bit as romantic as the two of them had envisioned.

Desiree & Steven

Desiree and Steven’s story began the way so many modern love stories do—on Tinder. Their first date was dinner at Granite City, and somewhere between conversations and shared laughs, they found something worth holding onto.

A few years later, Steven planned the most thoughtful proposal during a trip to San Diego. After a romantic dinner in a private bubble igloo overlooking the beach, they took a walk along the shoreline. As Desiree stepped toward the water, Steven stayed back because of his shoes. When she turned around after backing away from the waves, she found him on one knee.

He told her, “I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. Every day with you and everything we do together makes me fall more in love with you each day.”

Of course, her answer was yes.

After hearing that story, it made perfect sense that they wanted a wedding day centered around romance, intention, and celebrating with the people they love most.

The Wedding Day

The American Swedish Institute wedding Desiree and Steven envisioned was centered around timeless elegance, romantic gardens, and historic architecture. From the moment guests arrived, it felt as though they had stepped into Europe without ever leaving Minneapolis. They wanted their guests to feel like they had been transported somewhere far away—a place filled with history, old-world elegance, and beautiful gardens. Every space throughout the mansion felt timeless, and it was easy to forget we were still in Minnesota.

The color palette reflected that same feeling. Soft blues, lush greens, and overflowing florals created an elegant European garden party atmosphere. Every detail felt refined without feeling overdone, creating a space that was welcoming, romantic, and full of life.

One of my favorite parts of the morning was seeing Desiree’s wedding attire come together.

She wore a stunning Stella York gown that was unlike anything I’d photographed before. Underneath was a sleek, fitted dress that perfectly complemented her silhouette. Then, layered over top, was a luxurious overskirt that flowed from her hips into the most breathtaking train. Paired with a cathedral veil, the entire look felt incredibly regal while still remaining timeless.

Steven and his groomsmen looked equally classic in black tuxedos, while the bridesmaids wore beautiful blue gowns that complemented the garden-inspired color palette perfectly.

A First Look Straight Out of a Fairytale

Before the ceremony, Desiree and Steven chose to share a private first look in the Sunken Gardens.

Honestly, it felt like something straight out of Love Story.

Surrounded by stone pathways, perfectly manicured gardens, and the historic architecture of the estate, the moment felt quiet and completely removed from the excitement of the day. As Steven turned around and saw Desiree for the first time, everything else seemed to disappear.

These are always some of my favorite moments to photograph because there’s no audience, no pressure—just two people taking in the fact that they’re about to marry their best friend.

Becoming Husband and Wife

Their ceremony took place in the beautiful courtyard surrounded by friends, family, and endless greenery.

The setting couldn’t have been more perfect.

With the historic mansion standing behind them and gardens surrounding every corner, the ceremony felt intimate despite being shared with everyone they loved. It was exactly what they had hoped for—a gathering where family and friends could simply enjoy being together while celebrating the beginning of this new chapter.

You could feel throughout the day that this wasn’t about creating the biggest celebration possible. It was about creating meaningful moments with the people who matter most.

An Evening That Felt Like Italy

As the celebration moved into cocktail hour and dinner, the entire patio transformed into what honestly felt like a Tuscan courtyard.

String lights hung overhead while patterned blue-and-green linens covered the tables. Beautiful florals filled unique stone bust centerpieces that perfectly complemented the museum setting. Looking around, it truly felt as though we’d all been transported to the Italian countryside for the evening.

One detail that perfectly captured Desiree’s personality was their signature cocktails. Naturally, hers included edible glitter—a fun little touch that made everyone smile and couldn’t have fit her better.

Another favorite moment was seeing the “captains” at each reception table helping keep the energy high throughout dinner. It was such a fun way to encourage conversation and create an atmosphere where everyone felt included in the celebration.

The evening was full of laughter, heartfelt conversations, and the kind of joy that comes from having all of your favorite people together in one place.

Sunset Portraits

One of my favorite parts of photographing an American Swedish Institute wedding is exploring the incredible grounds during golden hour. As the evening settled in, we slipped away for one last round of portraits around the gardens and historic mansion.

The historic architecture, elegant gardens, and warm summer light created the dreamiest backdrop imaginable. Everywhere we turned felt like another hidden corner of Europe waiting to be photographed.

It’s moments like these that remind me why I love wedding photography so much.

The timeline slows down.

The nerves are gone.

The celebration has officially begun.

And for just a few quiet minutes, the couple gets to soak in the reality that they’re finally husband and wife.
